The Airmen's Stories - P/O H W A Britton
Henry Wilfred Arthur Britton was born at Crowborough, Sussex, on 8th July 1921, the son of a Major in the Royals Corps of Signals. He was educated at army schools in Egypt, Aldershot and Catterick before attending state schools in Beford and Edinburgh.
Britton joined the RAF on a short service commission in May 1939 and after training at 11 ERFTS Perth and 2 FTS Brize Norton he was posted to 12 Group Pool on 23rd February 1940 and converted to Hurricanes.
A posting to 17 Squadron at Martlesham Heath followed in March 1940.
Britton was killed on August 6th 1940, when his Hurricane, N2456, crashed and burned out in Debden Park shortly after take-off on a routine air test.
The cause remains unknown. He was 19 years old and is buried in All Saints' churchyard, Wimbish, Essex.
