The Airmen's Stories - AC2 C C Bailey
Colin Cyril Bailey joined the RAFVR at No. 2 RAF Depot, Cardington in January 1940 for the duration of hostilities as an Aircrafthand. He later took a radar course and joined 23 Squadron at Wittering on 23rd July 1940.
He later trained as a Radio Observer and was promoted to Sergeant after the Battle of Britain.
Commissioned in July 1941, Bailey was awarded the DFC (gazetted 30th November 1943) as a Flight Lieutenant with 219 Squadron, the citation read:.
With the exception of six months on operational training duty, this officer has been flying operationally since June 1940, and has been directly responsible for the destruction of at least three enemy aircraft. He has a fine operational record, during which his keenness to impart his knowledge to less experienced observers and coolness in the face of the enemy have been outstanding.
Bailey was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant.
