The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. F Gmur
Feliks Gmur was born on 6 November 1914. September 1939 found him serving with the 161st Fighter Flight which, together with 162nd Fighter Flight, formed III/6 Fighter Squadron in support of the "Lodz Army". In air combats over Poland in September 1939 he damaged a Heinkel He111 bomber. As Polish resistance collapsed Gmur escaped through Romania to France, and from there to Britain in early 1940, joining the RAF in February. After training at 15 EFTS and 6 OTU (Sutton Bridge) he was posted on 21 August 1940 to 151 Squadron at Stapleford. On 30 August 1940 he was shot down and killed in combat over the Thames Estuary, his Hurricane R4213 falling near Jacks Hatch, Epping.
He is buried in Epping Cemetery.
