The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. S R E Wakeling

 

Sidney Richard Ernest Wakeling was born on 19th February 1919 in Paddington, London, the son of William James Wakeling and Jessie Wakeling.

He was educated at Latimer Grammar School, Kensington.

He joined the RAFVR about April 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. He was called up on 1st September 1939.

After completing his training he was posted to 87 Squadron at Church Fenton in early July 1940.

 

 

In combat over Portland on 25th August Wakeling was shot down and killed. His Hurricane, V7250, came down at New Barn, Bradford Peverell near Dorchester.

 

 

Wakeling is buried in Holy Trinity churchyard, Warmwell.
