The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. P A Sobey


Philip Alfred Sobey was born on 24th May 1920 in Kent.

He was awarded Aero certificate 17145 at the Hampshire Aeroplane Club on 18th February 1939, his occupation recorded as Aircraft Fitter.



Sobey joined the RAF in October 1939 as an Airman u/t Air Gunner, he muct have been turned down for pilot training for some reason.

He completed his training and joined 235 Squadron on 22nd August 1940.

He was killed on 9th November 1940, serving with 431 Flight. Martin Maryland AR719 was reported missing on a ferry flight from Thorney Island to Malta. Also lost were F/O JT Burgess and Sgt. BFR Hubbard.

Sobey was 22. He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 19.
