The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. H Reed

 

Horace Reed joined the RAF on 31st March 1940 as an Aircrafthand. After basic training he volunteered for aircrew duties and was sent to Yatesbury for a short radar course.


He joined 600 Squadron at Manston on 11th July. After failing to qualify as a Radio Observer in late 1940 he came off aircrew duties, losing his acting rank of Sergeant.


Reed remustered as a firefighter and after training joined 45 Squadron, serving with it in the Middle East and later India from 11th November 1941 to 13th September 1945.


He was released from the RAF on 2nd May 1946 as a Corporal.
