The Airmen's Stories - P/O R McDougall
Roy McDougall was born on 16th June 1918 in
Ilford, Essex and joined the RAFVR about January 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot.
Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his elementary training at 7 EFTS Desford.
He moved on to 10 FTS Ternhill for No. 19 Course, which ran from 11th April to 24th July 1940. With his training completed he was commissioned and joined 3 Squadron at Wick on 27th July.
McDougall was attached to 5 OTU Aston Down from 5th August to 17th August 1940. He converted to Hurricanes and rejoined 3 Squadron at Wick on 20th August. He flew his first operational sortie on the 2nd September, investigating an X-raid.
McDougall joined 232 Squadron at Castletown on 10th September. In February 1941 he was posted to the Middle East, to join 73 Squadron at Gazala West.
On 15th July he destroyed two Ju87s, on 8th August he probably destroyed a Me109, on 8th January 1942 probably destroyed another and on 28th May he destroyed a Ju88.
He married Patricia Josephine Neilan in June 1943.
His subsequent service is currently undocumented until he was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant. At that time he was serving at 16 EFTS Derby.
McDougall died in January 1987 in Hammersmith.
