The Airmen's Stories - S/Ldr. H L Maxwell

 

Hugh Lockhart Maxwell was born on 21st December 1908 and commissioned in the Supplementary Reserve of Officers in the late 1920s. He relinquished this commission and was granted one in the Regular Army on 29th August 1930 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Northamptonshire Regiment.

Maxwell was granted a temporary commission in the RAF on 16th September 1935 as a Flying Officer. He was posted to No. 1 FTS Leuchars on 23rd September and after completing his training joined 26 (Army Co-operation) Squadron at Catterick on 27th April 1936.

He became a Captain in the Northamptonshire Regiment on 29th August 1938 and a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF on 16th September 1938.

Maxwell was later serving with 18 Squadron at Upper Heyford. He was posted to command 600 Squadron at Redhill on 16th September 1940, which he did until 15th December when he went to HQ 13 Group Newcastle as a Night Controller.

Maxwell was awarded the DSO (gazetted 22nd November 1940).

He was Station Commander at Hornchurch from 20th July to 28th October 1943 and at Biggin Hill from November 1943 to February 1945.

Maxwell was made a CBE (gazetted 1st January 1945).

He retired from the RAF on 10th June 1956 as a Group Captain, retaining the rank of Air Commodore.

He died on 4th January 1974.
