The Airmen's Stories - P/O G Marsland

Guy Marsland was born on 5th November 1919. He joined the RAF on a short service commission and began his initial training on 6th February 1939.

After completing his training he joined 245 Squadron at Leconfield on 6th November 1939. Marsland was attached to 32 Squadron from 19th to 24th September 1940 and was then posted to 253 Squadron at Kenley.

Marsland damaged a Me109 on 7th October 1940, destroyed a Me109 on the 29th and shared in the destruction of a Do17 and damaged another on 22nd November.

During 1941 Marsland served with 263 and 137 Squadrons.

Early in 1942 he was posted to the Far East and joined 136 Squadron in Burma as a Flight Commander. The squadron withdrew to Chittagong as the Japanese advanced.

On 23rd March 1942 Marsland destroyed a Japanese fighter over Akyab.

He retired from the RAF on 1st October 1958 as a Squadron Leader, retaining the rank of Wing Commander.

Marsland was later a successful antique dealer in Essex.

He died in 1983.
