The Airmen's Stories - F/O A J A Llewellin

Arthur John Alexander Llewellin, from Mountain Ash, Glamorganshire, was born on 15th January 1917, the son of Arthur and Lillian Llewellin.

He joined the RAF on a short service commission in June 1937.

He was posted to 10 FTS on 21st August and joined 19 Squadron on 7th November 1938.

Llewellin married Pamela Francis Orr in Marylebone, London in April 1940 (below).

He was serving with 29 Squadron at Digby by July 1940. Llewellin was posted to 5 OTU Aston Down for instructor duties on 19th August 1940.

He crashed on the aerodrome there on 5th October in Blenheim K7088. Both he and the pupil pilot were unhurt. Llewellin joined 255 Squadron at Kirton-in-Lindsey on 28th November 1940.

In October 1941 Llewellin was given command of 232 Squadron and in November the squadron left the UK for Singapore, arriving on 13th January 1942.

On 7th February 1942 his flight landed back after a patrol from Kallang but within fifteen minutes they were ordered back into the air. In his haste to get airborne Llewellin failed to fasten his seat harness or set his propeller to fine pitch. His Hurricane Z5482 struck the mast of a junk in the harbour as it struggled into the air and Llewellin was killed when it crashed into Keppel Harbour.

Llewellin is remembered on the Singapore Memorial, Column 41.
