The Airmen's Stories - P/O N L D Kemp

Nigel Leslie Digby Kemp was born on 24th July 1919 and joined the RAFVR about June 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training at 12 FTS Grantham from 9th June to 7th September 1940.

He was commissioned and arrived at 6 OTU Sutton Bridge on 10th September 1940.

After converting to Hurricanes, Kemp joined 85 Squadron at Church Fenton on 29th September. He moved on to 242 Squadron at Coltishall on 18th October.

Kemp claimed a Me109 probably destroyed on a bomber-escort to Bethune on 17th June 1941.

He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 7th October 1941), having been very successful in attacks on enemy shipping.

He went with 242 to Malta in November 1941.

Kemp was released from the RAF in 1946 and rejoined in 1948.

He retired on 31st August 1966 as a Flight Lieutenant.

Kemp was CFI at the Southampton School of Flying, Eastleigh in the 1970s.

He died on 13th March 2005.
