The Airmen's Stories - P/O J T Jones
Joseph Trevor Jones was born on 4th April 1919 in
Croydon, the son of Francis Louis Michael and Florence Mary Jones.
He was employed as a
Statistical Clerk when he
joined the RAFVR about December 1938 as an Airman u/t Pilot.
Called upon 1st September 1939, he completed his training at 10 FTS Tern Hill, was commissioned and arrived at 5 OTU Aston Down on 23rd June 1940.
After converting to Defiants Jones was posted to 264 Squadron at Duxford on 9th July. He failed to return from a combat with Ju88s and Me109s over the Channel off Thanet on 24th August in Defiant L6966.
Jones and his gunner, P/O WA Ponting, were both reported Missing. It is believed that they were shot down by Major Lutzow of JG3.
Jones was 21. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 8.
