The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. J I Johnson
Joseph Inkerman Johnson was born in June 1914 in Leicester and joined the RAF in June 1935 as an Aircrafthand. He later remustered as a flying trainee and qualified as a pilot.
He was on the strength of 222 Squadron at Hornchurch by 1st June 1940 when he claimed a probable He111 over Dunkirk.
He was shot down and killed by Me109’s on 30th August. His Spitfire R6628, crashed and burned out at Longhampark, Bishopsbourne, Kent.
Johnson was 26 and is buried in Towcester Cemetery, Northants.
