The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. R Ivey

 

Reginald Ivey was born on 17th April 1914 in Titchfield, Hampshire. He attended Prices School, Fareham then Titchfield Academy.

He joined the RAFVR about March 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training at 9 FTS Hullavington going on to 5 OTU Aston Down on 10th June 1940 to convert to Blenheims.

He joined 248 Squadron on 23rd June at Dyce and flew with them throughout the Battle.

On 18th November 1940 he attacked a Do18 that had settled on the water at Nordfjord, Norway.

He was posted away from 248 Squadron on 7th December 1941 and was later posted to the Middle East, where he was serving with 252 Squadron in 1942.

He was commissioned on 2nd May 1942 and on 12th May Ivey destroyed two Ju52 transports and damaged another.

He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 19th May 1944) serving as a Flight Lieutenant with 143 Squadron, a Coastal Command Beaufighter unit based at Manston.

Ivey was listed in the London Gazette as coming off the Emergency List as a Flight Lieutenant w.e.f 17th April 1959.

He died in October 1997 in Reading.
