The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. V Horsky

 

Vladimir Horsky was born on 11th February 1914 at Bruchotin, Czechoslovakia. He was serving in the Czech Air Force when the Germans took over his country on 15th March 1939. He escaped later to Poland and joined the Czech Air Force component there.

When Poland fell, Horsky made his way to France and enlisted in l'Armee de 1'Air in late 1939. He was trained at the large Czech depot at Chartres and then posted to GC I/6, operating the MS406.

After the French collapse in June 1940, he made his way to England and was taken into the RAF.

Horsky arrived at 6 OTU from RAF Duxford on 17th August 1940. After converting to Hurricanes he joined 238 Squadron at Middle Wallop on 12th September 1940.

He was shot down in combat with Me110s over the Solent on 26th September. His Hurricane, P3098, is presumed to have crashed into the sea.

Horsky is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 15.
