The Airmen's Stories - P/O G S Hebron

 

George Stephen Hebron was born on 3rd February 1916 in Eccles, Lancashire and educated at Cheetham Collegiate School Manchester and Manchester College of Technology.

He worked in the textile industry and was fluent in four languages.

He joined the RAFVR in March 1939 as an Airman u/t Observer and married Felicity Violet Ackroyd Turkhud in July in Paddington, London.

Called to full-time service at the outbreak of war, Hebron went to 9 AONS Squires Gate till the end of the year then completed his training at 5 B&GS Jurby for the first three months of 1940.

 

 

He was commissioned in March 1940 and joined 235 Squadron at North Coates on 1st April.

He served with 235 throughout the Battle of Britain and until March 1941 when he was posted to 2 (Coastal) OTU at Catfoss as an instructor where he served until November 1942.

Hebron joined 233 Squadron at St. Eval in November 1942.

On 29th November 1943 he was interviewed by S/Ldr. JA de Laszlo of the Special Operations Executive and entered the service on the same day.

His function was recorded only as 'Pinpointing' which may well refer to the selection of landing sites and drop zones for inserting agents and supplies.

 

 

Hebron went to the RAF Staff College in September 1944.

In January 1945 Hebron was posted to the Air Ministry on intelligence duties. He was released from the RAF in June 1946 as a Wing Commander.

Hebron died in 1994.
