The Airmen's Stories - F/O A B Halliwell

 

Antony Burton Halliwell was born on 1st February 1905 in Flixton, Lancashire and after leaving school he was employed in the furniture industry.

He joined the RAF in February 1940 with a commission as a direct-entry Air Gunner. He completed his training in March and was posted to 141 Squadron at Prestwick.

 

 

 

On 19th July 1940 Halliwell was flying with S/Ldr. WA Richardson, CO of 141. They were in one of nine Defiants that were attacked by Me109s off Dover. Theirs was one of only four Defiants that returned to base. Halliwell claimed a Me109 destroyed.

He was promoted to Acting Flying Officer on 5th October 1940 and was still serving with 141 Squadron on 14th November 1941.

He married Ankezelle Gower-Allen in July 1942 in Uxbridge.

His subsequent service is currently undocumented until he was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Squadron Leader.

Halliwell died in December 1969 in Midhurst, Sussex.
