The Airmen's Stories - P/O G J Grogan

George Jacques Grogan was born on 24th October 1909 in the Irish Republic and joined the RAF as an Aircraft Apprentice in September 1926, passing out in August 1929.

As an LAC he served overseas in the thirties and held the General Service Medal with the Bar for Northern Kurdistan plus the India General Service Medal with the Bar for North-West Frontier 1935.

Grogan volunteered for aircrew duties after the outbreak of war. He was commissioned in January 1940 and joined 23 Squadron at Wittering in February as an Air Gunner. He served with the squadron throughout the Battle of Britain and was posted away in March 1941.

On 21st March 1940 he had married Elizabeth Mellor Ingram in Crumlin, Northern Ireland.

His subsequent service is currently undocumented though it is known that Grogan stayed on in the RAF postwar.

He retired on 11th November 1956 as a Squadron Leader and died in 1983.
