The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. J F Fizel

Joseph Francis Fizel was born on 26th January 1916.

He married Mona Elizabeth Williams in April 1939 in Liverpool. The 1939 Census recorded his profession as 'Decorative painter'.

Fizel joined the RAF about June 1940 as an Aircrafthand. He volunteered for flying duties and was sent to Yatesbury for a short radar course.

He was posted to 29 Squadron in August 1940.

On 13th October 1940 Blenheims K7135 and L6637 were aloft from Tern Hill when they were attacked in error by S/Ldr. J Ambrus, F/Lt. HAG Comerford and Sgt. J Stehlik in Hurricanes of 312 Czech Squadron over the Point of Ayr, SW of Liverpool.

Despite firing the colours of the day L6637 was shot down with the loss of Sgt. RE Stevens, Sgt. OK Sly and AC2 A Jackson.

K7135 with F/O JD Humphreys, Sgt. EH Bee and Fizel was able to break off and return to base.

His subsequent service is currently undocumented but it is known that he died on 29th August 1976 in Cardigan, Ceredigion.
