The Airmen's Stories - P/O R F Ferdinand
Roy Frederick Ferdinand, from Chesham Bois, was born on 10th May 1920 and joined the RAFVR about June 1938 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called to full-time service on 1st September 1939, he completed his training and arrived at 6 OTU Sutton Bridge on 3rd June 1940 for conversion to Hurricanes.
He was commissioned on the 9th and then posted to 263 Squadron at Drem on the 23rd.
Ferdinand was still with the squadron when he was killed on 12th June 1941 aged 21 when Whirlwind I P7045 stalled and crashed on approach to Filton.
He is buried in Chesham Bois Burial Ground, Buckinghamshire.
The inscription is difficult to make out, it reads:
IN HONOUR AND LOVE
ROY F FERDINAND
KILLED FLYING ON ACTIVE SERVICE
12th JUNE 1941
AGED 21 YEARS
WHO SO TAKES THE WORLDS
LIFE ON HIM AND HIS OWN
LAYS DOWN HE DYING SO LIVES
