The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. S A Fenemore

 

Stanley Allen Fenemore, of Whitewell, County Antrim, was born on 25th April 1920 in Wavertree, Liverpool, the son of William Allen Fenemore and Gertrude Fenemore (nee Turnbull).

His father William worked for Ranks Flour Mill and had been relocated to their mill in Belfast, bringing his family with him.

Stanley Fenemore joined the RAFVR in February 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. He underwent elementary flight training at 24 Elementary & Reserve Training School (RFTS Sydenham), Northern Ireland.

With his training completed, he arrived at 5 OTU Aston Down on 19th May 1940, converted to Hurricanes and joined 245 Squadron at Aldergrove on 17th July.

 

 

 

 

He moved to 501 Squadron at Kenley in September. In an action with Me109s over Redhill on 15th October 1940, Fenemore was shot down and killed. His Hurricane, V6722, crashed at Postern Gate Farm, Godstone.

He was 20 years old and is buried in Allerton Cemetery, Liverpool.

A plaque marking the crash site was replaced by a larger memorial and the former plaque is now held in the social club at Kenley.

He is also commemorated at a new housing estate at Kenley (below).
