The Airmen's Stories - P/O K C Edwards

Kenneth Charles Edwards was born at Sidcup on 15th November 1910 and educated at Brockley Road School. He joined 600 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force in early 1936 as an Aircrafthand and began training as an air gunner in April. He was promoted to Sergeant in early 1939 and called for full-time service on 24th August.

Commissioned in August 1940, Edwards served with 600 until January 1941, when he was posted to 150 Squadron at Newton.

He was flying as a gunner in Wellington R1495 JN-B when it was shot down over Hamburg on 16th July 1941. He was the only crew member able to bale out and he was sent to Stalag Luft III at Sagan, going later to the satellite camp at Belaria.

Freed in May 1945, Edwards was released from the RAF in August that year as a Flight Lieutenant.
