The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. G Dixon
George Dixon, of Shrewsbury, was born on 12th October 1912. He joined the RAF as an Aircraft Apprentice in January 1928 and passed out in December 1930. He later remustered as an Airman u/t Observer. He completed his training and joined the Fighter Interception Unit when it was formed at Tangmere in April 1940.
He was in a Blenheim which failed to return from an operational patrol on the night of 13th September 1940. Dixon and the other two men on board, F/Lt. RG Ker-Ramsay and Sgt. EL Byrne, baled out and were captured. The aircraft, Z5721, crashed into the Channel off Calais.
Dixon was held in Stalag Luft 6 at Heydekrug. Freed in May 1945, Dixon was commissioned from Warrant Officer in June 1946. He retired from the RAF on 5th June 1948 and died on 28th February 1972.
