The Airmen's Stories - P/O J Cruttenden
John Cruttenden of Ealing, London was born on 14th December 1919, the son of John Cruttenden (1882-1969) and Elizabeth Gertrude Cruttenden (nee Thomas 1886-1957).
He joined the RAF in May 1938 on a short service commission.
He was posted from 6 OTU Sutton Bridge to 43 Squadron at Tangmere on 9th June 1940. On 7th July Cruttenden baled out after a glycol leak caused his engine to catch fire.
On 8th August he was shot down in Hurricane P3781 ten miles south of the Isle of Wight on and reported 'Missing'.
He was 20 years old and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 7.
