The Airmen's Stories - Sub/Lt.(FAA) H G K Bramah

 

Henry George Kenelm Bramah was born on 26th October 1918 in London and entered the Air Branch of the Royal Navy on 13th March 1939 with the rating of Midshipman (A).

He did his elementary flying training at 20 E&RFTS from 26th June 1939 and moved on to No. 1 FTS Leuchars on 4th September on No. 5 Course, which ended on 13th January 1940.

Bramah was one of the pilots attached to the RAF on 15th June 1940. He arrived at 7 OTU Hawarden on 17th June where he converted to Hurricanes and then joined 213 Squadron at Exeter on 1st July.

Bramah flew three times on 15th July. On the first sortie he destroyed a Do17. The second was a convoy patrol. On the third he was shot down by return fire from a Do17 over Old Mill Creek, near Dartmouth. He baled out, badly wounded and was rescued from the sea by the destroyer HMS Scimitar. He refused to have his arm amputated.

His recovery was slow and he did not return to 213 Squadron.

In January 1942 in Surrey he married Alma Charlotte Winifred Lazarus.

In 1945 Bramah was Fighter Direction Officer on HMS Glasgow.

He stayed on in the Navy postwar, retiring in 1955.

Bramah died on 31st March 1972 in Penistone, Yorkshire.
