The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. E J Bayliss
Ernest John Bayliss of Christchurch, Hampshire was born on 19th May 1919 in Fareham, the son of Ernest John Henry and Freda Bayliss (nee White).
He joined the RAF in July 1939 as an Airman u/t Observer. He completed his training and joined 248 Squadron, operating Blenheims, on 25th June 1940 and served with it while it was seconded to Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.
On 3rd November 1940 Bayliss was a member of the crew of Blenheim IV L9392 which was last seen attacking a He111 over the North Sea. It was presumed to have been shot down by return fire and its crew were reported 'Missing'.
Bayliss is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 11. He was 21 years old.
Also lost were P/O AHH Garrad and Sgt. HFJ Moynham.
