The Airmen's Stories - F/O E J Wilcox
Edgar John Wilcox was born in Croydon in 1917 and educated at Winton House School and Croydon High School. He joined the RAF on a short service commission in November 1937 and did his initial training at 3 E&RFTS, Hamble. He went to 8 FTS Montrose on 11th December and joined 72 Squadron at Church Fenton on July 9th 1938.

Over Dunkirk on June 2nd 1940 he destroyed a Ju87 and claimed a share in the destruction of a He59.
On August 31st Wilcox was shot down and killed over Dungeness. His Spitfire, P9457, crashed in Hungerford Field, Checkenden Farm, Staplehurst.
Wilcox was 23 and is buried in All Saints' churchyard, Staplehurst.
