The Airmen's Stories - F/O G E Moberly

George Edward Moberly was born in Bombay on December 23rd 1914. He was educated at Ampleforth School, Yorkshire and learned to fly at Ipswich in 1937. He joined 609 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force in the summer of 1938 but transferred to 616 Squadron when the Earl of Lincoln began to form it on November 1st 1938 and he was one of the first two officers to join.

Called to full-time service on August 24th 1939, Moberly was in action over Dunkirk. On May 28th he claimed a Me109 destroyed and possibly another and on June 1st he destroyed a Ju88.

Moberly shared a Do 17 on July 3rd, destroyed a Ju88 on August 15th and a Me109 on the 25th. He was shot down and killed in combat off Dover on August 26th 1940. His Spitfire, N3275, crashed into the Channel.

Moberly's body was recovered and he is buried in St Mary's churchyard, Caterham-on-the-HilI, Surrey.
