The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. D E Lloyd
David Edward Lloyd, of Wanstead, Essex joined the RAFVR around July 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called up on 1st September 1939 he completed his training and was posted to 64 Squadron at Leconfield on 28th August 1940. On 5th September Lloyd crashed in Spitfire P9563 while on a routine patrol but escaped unhurt.
He was posted to 19 Squadron at Fowlmere on 12th September and shared in destroying a Ju88 on the 18th.
 
A further move to 92 Squadron at Biggin Hill was made in November and he claimed a Me109 damaged on 1st December. Lloyd’s next move was to 63 OTU as an instructor on 19th August 1941.
He was commissioned in January 1942 but was then killed on 17th March in a mid-air collision. He was number 3 in an OTU formation and collided with an aircraft of 315 (Polish) Squadron.
Lloyd was 22 and is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Wanstead.
