The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. E F Le Conte


Edgar Francis Le Conte was bom on March 8th 1920. He joined the RAF in November 1939 for the duration, as an Airman u/t Air Gunner. He was one of the original aircrew members who joined the Fighter Interception Unit at Tangmere at its formation in April 1940.

Le Conte later retrained as one of the first Airbome Radar operators. On October 7th 1940 he assisted in damaging a Me11O, flying with Pilot Officer DL Ryalls. Commissioned from Warrant Officer in June 1943, le Conte was then with 604 Squadron at Scorton.

He assisted in damaging a Do17 over the Humber on July 17th. At the end of 1943 le Conte was at 108 Squadron at Luqa, Malta and from then until July 1944 he flew many sorties with the CO, W/Cdr. AJ Banham.

Le conte stayed in the RAF post-war and was made OBE on 1st January 1972, retiring on 8th March 1975 as a Wing Commander. He died on 4th May 1981.
