The Airmen's Stories - P/O S J Hill

Sydney Jenkyn Hill, from Ferndown, Dorset was born in 1917 and attended Uppingham School from 1931 to 1935. He went on to Imperial College, London where he studied Metallurgy and was a member of the University Air Squadron.

He joined the RAF on a direct-entry commission in March 1940 and after training joined 609 Squadron at Middle Wallop in October 1940. On the 21st he shared in the destruction of a Ju88, 609's 100th victory.

Hill was killed on 18th June 1941, as a Pilot Officer with 609. After being in combat with Me109’s off Cap Gris Nez on Circus 15 his Spitfire VB W3211 'H' was seen gliding down near Dover but it then crashed and burned out.

Hill is buried in Folkestone New Cemetery.
