Allan Arthur Atkinson joined the RAF in April 1940 as a direct-entry officer, completed his training and was posted to 23 Squadron at Wittering in June 1940.
On October 30th 1940, operating from Ford, Atkinson was one of the crew of Blenheim L6721 on a routine night patrol. The aircraft crashed at Orchard Way Road, South Bersted after R/T failure in deteriorating weather conditions. Atkinson, F/O HJ Woodward (pilot) and AC2 HT Perry were all killed.
Atkinson was 32 years old.
He is buried at St Mary's Church, Clymping.
